Late metre

Late metre

The OM theory has its own metrical evidence, although here the evidence is very late. Hermann (1923:257, 261) and Vaux (1992:298) have called attention to the fact that later Sanskrit poetry, such as that of the Epics and of Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit texts, have many clusters that do not make the preceding syllable heavy. Citing Varma (1929:95), Vaux lists for the Epics the clusters pr, ks., s"r, tr, kr, dr, br, vy, bhr and ddh; for BHS, he lists sr, s.y, s.t.h, nn, rh, sm, sph, sp, sn, sth, sk, sv, dhy, cy, tv, gr, and jn~. The obvious conclusion is that these are onset clusters, although Epic ddh and BHS nn are a little hard to believe.
